My Pets

I had many pets during my lifetime, ranging from little hamsters; rabbits and big dogs. We had them all!

Snowey and Smokey - Rabbits

When I was living in Asdonk Strasse in Neuwerk in Germany, I had two pet rabbits with the names of Snowey and Smokey. Snowey was a white fluffy rabbit with deep-red eyes and was a friend of another rabbit we had, whom we call Smokey, who was a dark ash-grey rabbit that's full of life.

We had two rabbit cages, one for each one; it's like giving them their own rooms. But to me, Smokey is a weird rabbit. Most probably he had magical powers, because I remember putting him in his cage, then I went to bed, but the next morning when I woke up and to check on the rabbits, Smokey was at the back of the cage on the outside, while the door was still closed.

Most probably he'd eaten through the cage, but now I'll never know, because I hadn't checked when I was a small boy, because I found it very freaky.

From then on we never had anymore bunny rabbits. Come to think of it now; no wonder they use rabbits in magic shows; they are in my mind magical creatures that appear and disappear just like that!

Randy - Labrador

When I was still living in Pastorenkamp in Munchengladbach Hardt, right next to our minute video shop which was in the house next door, I used to have a Labrador with golden shiny fur that was soft at the touch.

I remember playing with it in the garden; like playing ball. He was my best friend at that time, always following me and slept by my bed. I remember acting like Randy and am a dog too. I was crawling on all my fours and chasing Randy; in fact I still remember drinking milk from an orange bowl just like a dog, by the kitchen.

We then took Randy with us when we moved into Thelenkamp, which was just down the road from Pastorenkamp. Later we gave him away and I never saw Randy again!

And now in South Africa -

Fudge - Cocker spaniel

When we came over from Germany and bought a house in Plattekloof 3, we thought of buying a dog; a cocker spaniel to be more precise. That dog had long golden ears and curly golden fur.

That dog had an attitude and sometimes backchat to us; like growling-mumbling. Whatever we said to him, he talks back to us. He was such a smart dog. My sister found another homeless cocker spaniel, which was much younger and smaller than Fudge, whom she called Noela.

It's a shame actually, both dogs were so cute, especially Noela; so minute and fragile with those innocent eyes. The last time we saw those dogs were over a decade or maybe even fifteen years ago and knowing that a healthy dog lives around ten to fifteen years (that's what someone told me), maybe they all went to Heaven; reminds me of that song
